Steve has been involved with the building industry for over 35 years. We have compiled a list of the questions he gets asked most often by clients and prospects. These questions come from both returning clients and clients who are embarking on their first development project.

“How do I choose good reputable builders?”

Perhaps the biggest question of all, and one that can move on to “have I chosen good builders” as the project progresses. Before you start, do lots of reading around what to look out for,  an excellent resource is  Citizens Advice  which contains a wealth of information around the process and pitfalls. Once you have done this, the next step should be personal recommendation, ask your friends and relatives who have had similar work done, and what was their experience. Even if you don’t go with the builder they went with you will come away with a wealth of information around the process and many items and questions to bear in mind for your search.

Check the web, Facebook, and other social media outlets for local contractors, then visit their website for examples of their work, and if they look professional. From your shortlist contact them directly. Most firms will be keen to talk to you, and will be happy to spend the time discussing your requirements, what they can do to help you, and how their process works. They will also be able to put you in touch with clients who have already had work done.

Other things to consider are accessibility, i.e. their office location, are they local, and are they easily contactable. Whether the company is fully insured for damage to yours or your neighbour’s property whilst carrying out the work, and do they carry any additional insurance and what does that cover?

Generally a professional attitude and approach will deliver a professional result.
